🧙‍♀️ The Witch K-Drama Review: Hooked... But Not Entirely Convinced

I just finished watching The Witch — and I have thoughts.

This K-drama left me a little torn. While it definitely kept me hooked, by the end, I wasn't sure I totally liked it, or even fully understood it.

A Strong Start… Then a Rushed Finish

The Witch runs only 10 episodes, somewhat shorter than the average 16 episode format, and I think this worked against the show in some key ways. Those extra episodes usually give room for deeper character development, richer backstories, and more satisfying plot twists. Without that time, The Witch felt rushed — especially in its final stretch.

Big reveals were dropped with little to no build-up. There was one moment, in particular (spoiler-light) where a second character is suddenly revealed to also be a witch — and it just didn’t make sense. There was no setup, very little development, and not a lot of logic behind it.

The “Witch” Who Wasn’t

There was so much left unsaid, especially about the lead character, Park Mi-Jung (Roh Jeong-Eui). She’s the ‘witch’—except, not really. She doesn’t do anything evil. She doesn't even use magic. In fact, she seems more cursed than anything, and the show never really explains why.

Lee Dong-Jin, one of the main characters, played by Jin Young, develops this "law of death" theory, a vague statistical concept, to explain the chaos around her. But the explanation is vague at best and doesn't make sense. Is this law affecting everyone? Just these characters? It’s never explained, so it kind of lost me. And when the show tries to wrap things up neatly in the end, it just didn't work for me.

What Kept Me Watching

That said, I wanted to love this drama. The acting was solid. The visuals were beautiful. The pacing, up until the finale, had me fully invested. And even though the backstory was lacking, I wanted to know how it would all end — I just wasn’t happy with the way it did.

It almost felt like they ran out of budget and had to end it quickly at 10 episodes, so they rushed to try to tie all the loose ends together in one final go. But it didn't land, and, in the end, it felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.

Final Thoughts: Worth Watching, But Flawed

If you enjoy supernatural mysteries then it's probably worth watching, but just don't expect all the dots to connect. By the end, you may not get all the answers you're looking for.

This one gets a 3.5 out of 5 Finger Hearts.

Beautifully executed in many ways — but it left me feeling just slightly unsatisfied.

Have you watched The Witch?

Did the ending work for you? Or were you left with as many questions as I was?
